Our past president had been fighting a congenital kidney disease for years when he was diagnosed with throat cancer.  He underwent manyandrew-cotner

procedures, then lost his voice last year.  After a long battle, Drew stopped his most recent treatments in Champaign and decided on hospice.

But he wanted to return to San Diego.  Drew traveled to Madison, Wisconsin, one last time for his doctor to make repairs so that he could swallow again. Then he got on a plane with a friend on April 18.

He settled into his often-used rooms at the home of Pat and Bob Giles and was joined by his friend and caregiver two days later. He shopped for lots of stuff, walked at the beach, joined a gym, drove to Julian, ate at a Mexican restaurant, went to the Cardiff flower fields, watched his cousins’ ball games and sat outside with buddies who came to visit. In addition, he checked a major item off his bucket list.

Andrew passed peacefully surrounded by friends.
